American Heart Association and Sheehy Auto Stores Spread Message of Fitness and Fun
National Walking Day is Wednesday, April 4, and to help encourage people to lace up and walk, the American Heart Association and Sheehy Auto Stores are hosting a prize-filled walking course at the Springfield Town Center from 10:30 a.m. – 1 p.m. The event will begin at 6500 Springfield Center Drive, Springfield Virginia at the Grand Court entrance near the Starbucks. The walk is free for everyone to participate. Studies have suggested that moderate physical activity has many proven benefits for an individual’s overall health, such as lowering blood pressure, increasing HDL or “good” cholesterol and controlling weight. All these changes help to reduce the risk of heart disease and stroke, the nation’s No. 1 and No. 5 killers.
“Sheehy Auto Stores is proud to work with the American Heart Association to deliver this fun and free event to the community,” said Vince Sheehy, president of Sheehy Auto Stores. “We know the prevention and wellness benefits of moving more, and we hope this event will help kick-start a new healthy habit of walking for many.” In addition to the walking course, the American Heart Association will have several education stations that include: learning the lifesaving skill, hands-only CPR; a blood pressure activity station to teach the critical understanding of blood pressure measurements; a bicycle game station to learn about AHA bike and walking path initiatives, a selfie station and more. Stores at the Springfield Town Center will participate with gift cards, prize baskets and other raffle items including Washington Redskins memorabilia signed by Trent Murphy and Trent Williams and two suite tickets for the Wizards vs. Hawks game on April 6!
The American Heart Association recommends that adults participate in at least 150 minutes of moderate intensity physical activity or 75 minutes of vigorous intensity physical activity or a combination of both each week. Statistics shows that people stick to walking plans more than other forms of physical activity. All walkers across the region are encouraged to share their walking selfies on Twitter and Instagram, using #MoveMoreDC, and tagging @HeartofGWR on Twitter. Be part of the movement and register for your free toolkit at Heart.org/MoveMore.
