The American Heart Association (AHA) and Guilford County Health Department are proud to announce the Hampton Family Community Health Initiative. Generously funded by The Blairton Hampton Family and with the support of Mount Zion Baptist Church of Greensboro (Mount Zion), this initiative will provide healthy cooking and eating classes for multicultural residents living in underserved communities within Greater Guilford County. For three years, the Hampton Family Community Health Initiative will provide the AHA’s Mobile Kitchen healthy cooking demonstrations at large community events and reach up to 3,000 Greensboro residents annually with healthy cooking classes.

We are excited to be able to help people in our own black communities by bringing healthy cooking and healthy food right to their neighborhoods,” says Blairton S. “Unfortunately, many Greater Guilford County residents lack the knowledge, incentive and access to consistently make healthy food choices,” shares Merle Green, Public Health Director for Guilford County. “The Hampton Family Mobile Kitchen will reach people where they live, work, play and pray, teaching them valuable cooking skills and healthy eating habits so they can create healthier lives for themselves and their families.”
According to the 2016 Guilford County Community Health Assessment, residents of census tract in low-income and low-educational attainment areas of the county have life expectancies as much as 18 years lower than residents of high income, high education areas. Social factors like education, unemployment, and lower income levels combined with cultural habits, limited access to fresh foods, sedentary lifestyles and inadequate access to quality health care can have a direct impact on one’s ability to live a long, healthy life. The Hampton Family Mobile Kitchen will support healthy food access by complementing the Greensboro Health Department’s fruit and vegetable initiative.
As reported in the September 2016 Food Research and Action Center Report, Greensboro has the 5th highest food hardship rate for households with children in the nation. North Carolina is 9th in food insecurity according to the United States Department of Agriculture, which collects data on where people have the least access to fresh, healthy foods. As a metropolitan area, Greensboro and High Point are one of the worst in the nation for food insecurity.
The Hampton Family Community Health Initiative and Mobile Kitchen will also increase cardiovascular health and wellness education. Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in the world. African Americans experience an even greater risk for heart disease and stroke. African Americans have almost twice the risk of first-ever strokes compared to whites and have higher death rates related to stroke. High blood pressure is very prevalent in African Americans in the United States. African Americans are also almost twice as likely to experience cardiac arrest than Caucasians, with survival rates twice as poor.
The AHA and the Guilford County Health Department will work with Mount Zion, college students, the Greensboro Collaborative, Bonner Scholars Program, and other community partners to ensure the sustainability of the program.

When families learn how to shop, cook and eat healthy, we are also exposing younger generations to healthier habits earlier in life,” shares Pastor Odell Cleveland, Chief Administrative Officer for Mount Zion Baptist Church of Greensboro.
The Hampton Family Mobile Kitchen classes will bring individuals and smaller groups together, focusing on moms, families, seniors, people living with Diabetes, and those at risk for Diabetes, heart disease or stroke. N’gai Dickerson, Mobile Kitchen Chef Manager will lead the healthy cooking classes, providing “hands on” instruction and education with food for the classes purchased through the Renaissance Community Cooperative in Greensboro. Participants will depart each class with enough healthy food to feed up to four family members. Class attendees will also receive recipe cards, nutritional information, smart shopping and meal guidance tools, and other incentives such as can strainers and recipe books.
