There is a lot to celebrate in North Carolina!
Our You’re the Cure advocates tirelessly invested their time and energy taking action on important policies.
We are happy to report these victories in North Carolina:
- The state budget included $250,000 to the Department of Agriculture to continue the Healthy Corner Store Initiative. We will continue to work with the Department to ensure success of the program to increase access to healthy foods in communities that need them most.
- The state budget included $500,000 nonrecurring for each year of the biennium for youth tobacco prevention programs. Also included was $500,000 each year recurring for tobacco cessation programs.
- At the local level we made significant progress to build more active and safe communities through bike and pedestrian funding wins.Charlotte and Greensboro passed bonds for bike and pedestrian infrastructure funding, while Durham, Raleigh, and Mecklenburg County included funding for bike and pedestrian projects. This positive movement is encouraging and we anticipate more opportunities.
The legislature is currently back in special session to redraw state legislative districts and to override Governor Cooper’s vetoes on some legislation. We are following special session, looking for opportunities related to our issues.
We look forward to continue working with our advocates over the coming year!
Our mission is to be a relentless force for a world of longer, healthier lives. For nearly 100 years, we’ve been fighting heart disease and stroke, striving to save and improve lives. Heart disease is the No. 1 killer worldwide, and stroke ranks second globally. Even when those conditions don’t result in death, they cause disability and diminish quality of life. We want to see a world free of cardiovascular diseases and stroke.
