New Bern Volunteers Rally for 25th Anniversary Heart Ball After Historic Flooding

When New Bern, NC was hit hard by Hurricane Florence in September 2018, New Bern Heart Ball volunteers were busy preparing for the 25th annual event.  The area experienced historic flooding that damaged or destroyed homes, businesses and schools across Craven and Jones counties. Many wondered, would the Heart Ball go on?

The community, sponsors and members of the New Bern Heart Ball Executive Leadership Committee rallied behind the American Heart Association mission and decided to move forward, even in the face of massive hurdles.  Volunteers like co-chairs Joe and Laura Peters were committed to staying the course to ensure that Eastern NC families and friends would have more precious time together, free of heart disease and stroke.

As part of the Heart Ball campaign, the American Heart Association and supporters have come together to provide CPR kits and train loved ones of those affected by drug addiction and donate much needed physical education equipment to local programs like the Boys and Girls Club of Coastal Carolina.

The event moved to a new location and the team has set out to create an evening that lives up to it’s theme “A Celebration of True Heart”.

“It has been incredible to witness the passion our volunteers have for our mission,” said Erin Fox, AHA Development Director. “We are excited to come together in the new year to celebrate the resilience of the New Bern community and continue the fight to save lives from heart disease and stroke.”

The New Bern Heart Ball will take place Saturday, January 12, 2019 at the North Carolina History Center at Tryon Palace.
